My general idea for Wellington is for a seperated two way cycleway travelling through the Wellington CBD, seperate from the waterfront, for commuter cyclists who want to safely and quickly travel through the CBD without having to battle cars and pedestrians.

My general idea is for the council to remove car parking from one side of the roads on the map below and construct a seperated two way cycleway along these streets. I think its not an unrealistic idea. It would improve cycle safety through the CBD drastically I think.  E.g. something like this

Big Coast MTB Fun Ride - Seeking Volunteers
The Hutt City Council is seeking volunteers to assist with the annual Big Coast two day mountain bike ride on the weekend of March 19-20. Volunteers are required for various non-riding and riding tasks including riding and course marshals.

The Big Coast is unique in NZ providing a fully supported, non-competitive, fun and social riding experience through some of the best scenery the wellington region has to offer, including coastal areas not open to the public.

I rode through manners st this afternoon at about 17:30. from the pedestrian crosswalk at courtenay theater, to the corner of willis st, google maps says it's a distance of 650m. this took 7+ minutes. is it now safe to say that WCC screwed up?

or is there a better way to get through that section of the city? i guess ANY other way would be better...?

could drastically improve the safety of cyclists approaching the Mt Vic
tunnel from the Hataitai side.

comes with brand-new kenda 700x35 tyres, topeak "super tourist" rear rack, sealed bottom bracket (installed) and a bell. the original saddle is on it now, and has seen very little use.

i was wondering if any of the aspiring or incumbent council-critters stand out (either good or bad) from a cycling perspective... does anyone have a cycle-centric review of candidates?

I read the summary of the Ngauaranga Triangle Strategic Study this morning and was really impressed with how well cycling is considered along with pedestrians. It was really balanced - not just about cars.

Even in the summary there is a lot to read but the highlights as I see are:

1. The tawa interchange is the top priority but right at number two (of the eight or so recommendations is a 3m wide cycleway down Middleton Road between Johnsonville and Tawa. This will apparently allow the cycle use to double to 300 a day.

Joined a picnic organised by the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition - brought fraternal greetings from CAW!

They've achieved an enormous amount - cycle routes throughout the city, bikes on buses and trains - there's even a motorway overpass (shades of the proposed Basin Reserve flyover!) that has now been partly turned over to a bicycle path! The annual cycling budget is $CAN25 million.
