Expert cycling panel welcomed
Getting more people on bikes will deliver huge benefits to all New Zealanders, say cycling advocates.

An expert panel on cycling safety was announced today by Associate Transport Minister Michael Woodhouse, following a recommendation from Coroner Gordon Matenga.

However, a focus on cycling safety alone is unlikely to produce the best result, says Cycling Advocates' Network spokesperson Patrick Morgan.

"Cycling is not a problem to be solved, but a significant opportunity to deliver a range of benefits: economic,...

We would like to present our submission verbally.

CAN Submission to WCC
Feb 2014
Cycling Advocates Network supports the Council's proposal to improve pedestrian, cyclist and motorist safety in the CBD by lowering the speed limit to 30km/h.

Safety
The Safer Journeys strategy (Ministry of Transport 2010) states that: "Pedestrians currently account for 10 percent of all road deaths and cyclists 3 percent. However, in urban areas, pedestrians and cyclists account for 30 percent of all road deaths. The majority of crashes involving a cyclist or pedestrian and a motor vehicle...

Wellington City Council is proposing to build a safer cycling route from island Bay to the Wellington CBD.
No one thinks making people cycle up busy Island Bay Parade and Adelaide Rd is a good idea. What are the best ways forward?

A DomPost story quotes Ray from the golf club and Paul from the Council but no cyclists.
Here's our 2 cents.

Good on Ray for defending his turf. The golfers have worked hard to revive the Mornington club, and it's no surprise they are cautious about proposals for a walking / cycling path....

Cycle Aware Wellington is hiring a part-time campaign manager. We need a person to run an effective campaign for quality cycle lanes.

This will be a significant year for cycling in Wellington. In 2013 we voted for a bike-friendly council and have upped the cycling budget to $4.3 million. The next major project is the Island Bay - CBD route.
Making sure this is a high-quality cycling route is our key task, as it will set the tone for the future. There are significant stakeholder issues to resolve. Without strong community support we risk getting a poor quality cycling...

Give the perfect bike for Christmas

Forget about Xbox and iPhones this Christmas - the best gift you could get your kid is a bike, says Cycling Action Network spokesperson Patrick Morgan.

"It's the gift of freedom, independence, joy. Learning about risk and consequences. Sweating, cruising, hanging out with your mates. Maybe a bit of mischief."

What should parents look for when bike shopping?
- you get what you pay for
- go to your local bike shop for expert advice
- avoid the big box retailers
- or go second hand, take a...

At CAN we're united by our love of cycling. Our objective is more people cycling more often.

Riding a bike improves our health, wealth and happiness. It also delivers significant benefits to the wider community: it boosts business, reduces congestion and makes our streets more attractive places to be.

New York cycling advocate Paul Steely White recently visited Auckland. He told us that businesses experienced a 49 percent increase in retail spending after protected bike lanes were built on 9th Avenue. Injuries among all street users fell 58 percent. That's right: better...

News release from Cycling Advocates Network (CAN) and Bike NZ
14 November 2013

An inquiry into cycling, recommended by Coroner Gordon Matenga, should go much wider than a safety panel led by the NZ Transport Agency, say cycling advocates.

Getting more people on bikes will deliver huge benefits to all New Zealanders, so we need a high-level Public Inquiry to make the most of the opportunity, say the Cycling Advocates' Network (CAN).

A focus solely on cycling safety is unlikely to produce the best result, says CAN spokesperson Patrick Morgan.

"Cycling is...

Q: What is the official design guide is for NZ cycling planning and engineering?

A: The NZTA Register of Stds and Guidelines in theory is the place to know what's official and what's not - see http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/nzta-register-network-standards-guidelines/.

Unfortunately it's not that terribly helpful as it lists both the NZ Supplement to GTEP Pt.14 and the more recent Cycling Aspects of Austroads Guides (which essentially pulls out all of the cycling-relevant bits from the new Austroads publications). Personally I would defer to the latter where possible and only...

Which candidates love bikes?

We worked with the lovecycling campaign to send some bikey questions to the candidates for October's local elections. Here are the questions, and the answers they gave. The answers are in this order:

mayoral candidatescandidates for the WCC wardscandidates for the GWRC electorates.

Within each section, the candidates are in alphabetical order by name. The different roles have a different link to cycling policy and spending, and you'll see that reflected in their answers.
