Hi all,
I am delighted to tell you that the proposal passed unanimously but
with no Councillor Morrison around to high five.
We need to educate a few of these councillors, Councillor Ritchie,
Councillor Gill and Councillor Best in particular. Ritchie doesn't
even think that parallel parking would be safer along there. She is
supportive of cycling but doesn't seem to know what will make it
better so ends up saying some strange things.
Not sure if its worth wasting our time on Councillor Coughlan as I
suspect she's a lost cause. They are hung up on this visibility issue
but Celia did a good job at replying to that in terms of how
outrageous it would be to suggest all pedestrians, who also have
visibility problems, wear fluro. Councillor Coughlan made one comment
about if we want the separate facillity along Aotea Quay then we can't
expect to have our cake and eat it too. Andy Foster kindly pointed
out that there are two separate markets of cyclists they are catering for.
They agreed to put a reference to the parallel parking option that got
dismissed in 2001in the background information but only consult on the
clearway one. They said if the feedback was that clearway was bad and
parallel would be better then they would put out another traffic
resultion for consulting. I guess its our job to encourage the
retailers that if they think it would be better for them, instead of
just dismissing the whole thing, to put the preference for another
option in their submission?
Maybe some more friendly chats with the retailers are in order some
time soonish?
See you all soon,
Claire
